Our Latest Episode: Globemallows! Plus Ash Meadows Update
We start the episode by sharing some good news about the lithium mining project near Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge being delayed due to public pressure. They express their gratitude to the Bureau of Land Management for stepping in and protecting the endangered species and ancient water in the area. we also announce the formation of the podcast’s new non-profit home, the Desert Advocacy Media Network, which will allow we to continue 90 Miles from Needles’ work advocating for protecting and conserving the desert. Alicia has fun exploring ways to use our new group’s acronym.
The main topic of the episode is the desert globe mallow (Sphaeralcea ambigua), a plant that is commonly found in the Mojave Desert and other desert regions. Chris shares his personal experience of encountering the plant during a road trip and describes its unique characteristics, such as its orange petals and gray-green leaves. we discuss how the globe mallow is a resilient plant that can grow in disturbed areas and act as a protector of the desert.
We then visit different locations to observe and discuss the globe mallow in its natural habitat. We highlight how the plant adapts to different environments, such as growing under creosote bushes or in disturbed soil. We also mention the importance of the globe mallow as a food source for animals like jackrabbits, bighorn sheep, and chuckwallas.
